Canadian novelist Frank Lucius Packard worked as a civil engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. His experiences working on the railroad led to his writing a series of mystery novels, the most famous of which featured the character Jimmie Dale. This collection of 15 short stories is Packard’s first book. The best-known story, to Canadians at least, may be Shanley’s Luck, based on the C.P.R. Beavermouth Riots of 1885 that interfered with construction until the legendary Sam Steele intervened.
